There is plenty here for children of all ages to enjoy. For children that love the water, Valle Verzasca and Valle Maggia is definately worth a visit, particularly on a hot sunny day. The river here is fantastic to swim in and the setting is absolutely idyllic.

At Swissminiatur you will find more than 120 models representing the houses, castles, cathedrals and other buildings of Switzerland. Any young train enthusiast will love this place as it has more than 3500 metres of railway with no less than 18 trains, funiculars, rack-railways, cable-cars and boats in motion. On the way to Swissminiatur, is the Alprose Swiss chocolate factory. The museum here introduces visitors to the various steps of chocolate making and at the end of the tour a visit to the shop will give you the chance to try some of the Alprose products.

For those looking for something more active, Monte Tamaro is also a great place for all the family to enjoy. The highlights include an exciting 880 metre downhill ride on the alpine bob sleigh at Alpe Foppa, a 440 metre flight on the longest flying fox in Switzerland as well as a fantastic adventure park which is divided into 5 parts with various levels of difficulty (chidren's course as well as green, blue, red, black and extreme black course!) There is another adventure park about 30 minutes away in Gordola, which is open from April until October each year. This park is best described as a high wire obstacle course in the trees. The park has a rope course of 700m hung amongst the trees and 53 different games with 6 different difficulty levels, from children's to 'demanding' routes for those over 150 cm tall.

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you could try your hand at falconry in Locarno where you will get to see birds of prey in flight as well as Spanish horseback riding. Locarno also offers a go-karting course - 8-13 year olds can go-kart on Wednesdays and Sundays between 14.00 and 15.00, whilst anyone aged 14 or over is permitted every day between 14.00 and 19.00.

If your children love animals, there are several zoos and parks nearby. The Parco della Villa Pallavicino is a park built around a large old house, with a botanic garden and various birds and animals such as deer, zebra and wallabies wandering around. The safari park in Pombia is open all year round and also has an entertainment park with rides.
